Modernism in Barcelona: a singular trip

Barcelona’s bourgeoisie and its commitment to the latest modernist trends were the driving forces behind architectural change in the city of Barcelona. So the relationship of the most important families of the city with the most prominent architects of the time, now provides us with a trip back in time through an interesting architectural route around the city.

The modern movement in Barcelona

A good example of this collaboration are the three houses of the so-called “Apple of discord” in the Paseo de Gracia, where the architect Lluis Domenech i Montaner, Josep Puig i Cadafalch and Antoni Gaudí built houses for families Lleó Morera, Amatller and Batllo, respectively.

Although it is the Eixample district which concentrates most of modernist buildings, this architectural style is also present in many other places in Barcelona. So, before leaving the Eixample, we could visit the Pedrera or the newly opened to the public Casa de les Punxes or Casa Terrades.

Walking to Ciutat Vella we can also appreciate the incomparable Palau de la Musica, and the Parc of Ciutadella, the building of the Museum of Natural Sciences and the Zoo, to name a few.

We also find the Hospital de la Santa Creu and Sant Pau, one of the nine masterpieces of Modernism in Barcelona, that are declared World Heritage Sites by Unesco, located close to one of the most prominent buildings designed by Antoni Gaudi, the Sagrada Familia.

Barcelona becomes the European city where Modernism has a greater presence in form and in personality of the city.
