Free museums in Barcelona: Information and Rankings for 2020

Visiting the most famous museums in Barcelona without having to pay a single euro is possible, if you know the right time to go. Some museums open for free once a week, normally on Sundays, others once a month and some wait for holidays to show their exhibitions for free.

Below, we reveal when Barcelona’s museums open for free and what you can find in each one. The money you save you can spend on unforgettable experiences like:

Museo Picasso (Picasso Museum)

One of Spain’s most internationally renowned artists has a dedicated museum in the centre of Barcelona, with more than 3,500 works of art. The artist himself wanted it to be created.

There is free entry every Thursday from 18:00 to 21:30. It is also free on the first Sunday of every month as well as 24 May and 24 September.

Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña (National Art Museum of Catalonia)

This museum is in the Palacio de Montjuïc, which you can see in all its grandeur from Plaza España. It exhibits one of the most complete collections of Romanesque art in the world.

The building itself is always free to visit, however, if you want to visit the museum for free you can go every Saturday from 15:00, the first Sunday of the month or the 18 May and 11 September.

Museo de Historia de Barcelona (the History of Barcelona Museum)

As you can imagine from its name, this museum exhibits the city’s cultural heritage. It includes a journey through the city’s underground archaeology with interesting Roman remains.

It opens its doors for free every Sunday from 15:00 to 20:00, and is free all day on the first Sunday of every month.

CosmoCaixa Barcelona

CosmoCaixa is great for children and all ages. It houses didactic and interactive expositions, focused on topics such as space, history and the animal and plant world.

It’s free on the first Monday of every month.

Cosmocaixa gratis Barcelona

Centro de Cultura Contemporánea (Centre of Contemporary Culture)

Dedicated at spreading modern and contemporary culture, it’s one of the top visited museums in the city. Ideal for lovers of music, cinema, philosophy, literature and performing arts.

Free entry every Sunday from 15:00 to 20:00, on 18 May (the Night of the Museums) and the 24 September.

Museo de Ciencias Naturales (Museum of Natural Sciences): Every Sunday from 15:00, 18 May, 12 February and 24 September.

Museo de las Culturas del Mundo (Museum of World Cultures): Every Sunday from 15:00 to 20:00, and all day on the first Sunday of the month.

Museo Marítimo (Maritime Museum): Every Sunday from 15:00, 18 May and 24 September.

Monasterio de Pedralbes (Pedralbes Monastery): The first Sunday of the month from 15:00.
