How to eat like a local in Barcelona: unmissable things

To try and to taste Barcelona´s gastronomy like an authentic local is one of life´s great pleasures.

Spain´s cuisine is one of the most famous in the world, known for Mediterranean dishes that combine the freshest of ingredients.

If it is your first time in Spain and you want to eat like an authentic Barcelona local, continue reading and we will reveal to you the best places in Barcelona.

Best tapas in Barcelona

Tapas, paella and sangría. These are three magic words that you have to learn before arriving in Barcelona, things that everyone in the world comes looking for.

However, if you are going to travel to this city for the first time we recommend that you explore away from the centre to enjoy the most local cuisine.

Las Ramblas is one of the most popular streets with tourists, and restaurants in the area take advantage of that.

You will see that plenty offer paella and sangria at a cheap price, but we can assure you that they are not the best places to eat.

A little flamenco

If you want to taste a selection of Catalan tapas and furthermore enjoy a Flamenco show, we can suggest that you sign up for our Flamenco, Born & Tapas tour.

This is, without doubt, the best option for falling in love with Barcelona’s culture in one of the city´s most unique neighbourhoods, el Born.

This area is especially beautiful at night, when you can contemplate beautiful buildings such as Santa María del Mar and all the old historic town under the moonlight.

Another place where you can try some of the city´s best tapas is the Poble Sec neighbourhood, on the famous Calle Blai.

Although lately it is a place where many tourists visit, it is one of the most traditional streets where you can grab a drink or dine on tapas for very little money.

Food Markets in Barcelona

Something that you can´t not do is visit one of Barcelona’s food markets. The most traditional markets have centuries of history and form part of the city´s essence.

Here, you can find fresh, high-quality products at market prices and furthermore, many of the visitors are locals, so you can be sure it is worth visiting.

San Antoni market, Santa Caterina market and la Boquería are some of the most famous. The latter is found in the centre of the city, on one side of las Ramblas, so you can arrive there by foot. In the entrance you can find all sorts of incredible fruit juices for 1 or 2€.

One of the best plans is to pass by all the different food stalls where you will find things from the freshest seafood to recently cut ham.

And what to buy here?

Don´t worry if you don´t know what to pick, in WEBCN we offer a tour in which a professional chef will show you the best products of Catalan cuisine.

What is more, the route ends with the preparation of a paella using the best market ingredients. Learn to cook paella and surprise your guests when you return.

Gracia and el Born, two places where you can eat like a local

Both Gracia and el Born are two of the most typical neighbourhoods in Barcelona where to spend some of your trip.

Gracia is located above Diagonal, in the higher part of the city. It is a very traditional neighbourhood that has remained intact despite the passage of time.

Here you will find restaurants with typical Catalan food and some of the best terraces to enjoy a beer or aperitif in the sunshine.

El Born is also a neighbourhood with a very distinct essence. Located in the heart of the city and the historic district, it is full of alleyways and corners full of charm. Just like in Gracia, you can find great restaurants to lunch, dine or snack.

However, el Born is a touristic neighbourhood and so it can be difficult to find a traditional place without spending a lot of money.

For that reason, maybe your best option is to join our Barcelona Gourmet Food Tour, in which we combine the tourist sites of the city with Catalan gastronomy, with a route through some of the city´s most distinct taverns and restaurants where you can eat like an authentic local.

Take advantage!
