Cataplana de Marisco – This seafood stew is one of the region’s signature dishes. It’s made with a variety of shellfish, such as clams, mussels, and prawns, as well as vegetables, tomatoes, and herbs. It’s cooked in a copper pot called Cataplana, which steams the ingredients and infuses them with flavor.
Sardines – Grilled sardines are a popular dish in Algarve, especially during the summer months when the fish are in season. They are typically served with boiled potatoes, peppers, and a salad.
Peri-Peri Chicken – This spicy chicken dish originated in Mozambique, but it has become a favorite in Algarve as well. The chicken is marinated in a spicy peri-peri sauce made with chili peppers, garlic, and lemon juice, and then grilled or roasted.
Arroz de Marisco – This seafood rice dish is another classic in Algarve. It’s made with rice, various shellfish, tomatoes, onions, and garlic. The dish is cooked slowly, allowing the rice to absorb the flavors of the seafood and vegetables.
Dom Rodrigo – This dessert is a sweet and sticky mixture of almonds, sugar and egg yolks. It’s often served in small cups or wrapped in paper, and it’s a popular treat during festivals and holidays.
Figos com Presunto – This simple but delicious appetizer consists of fresh figs wrapped in cured ham. The sweetness of the figs pairs perfectly with the saltiness of the ham, creating a flavor combination that is hard to resist.
Medronho – This traditional liqueur is made from the fruit of the medronho tree, which grows in the region. It has a strong, fruity flavor and a high alcohol content, so it’s often sipped slowly as a digestif.
